Hunger shows scarcity of democracy

The City that Ended Hunger :: Belo Horizonte, Brazil — YES! Magazine:

"In writing Diet for a Small Planet, I learned one simple truth: Hunger is not caused by a scarcity of food but a scarcity of democracy. But that realization was only the beginning, for then I had to ask: What does a democracy look like that enables citizens to have a real voice in securing life’s essentials? Does it exist anywhere? Is it possible or a pipe dream?"

The basic reason is lack of a citizen-ownership democracy. Citizen-ownership income is taken away by the state. The rich can afford that. The poor cannot.

Here are the questions to her questions.

Q: What does a democracy look like that enables citizens to have a real voice in securing life’s essentials?
A: A citizen-ownership democracy where citizen income is returned to citizens.

Q: Does it exist anywhere?
A: A partial model exists in Alaska. The dividend is only $1000 to $2000 per resident per year. In a full citizenship ownership model, the amount is estimated to be about $8000 per resident per year.

Q: Is it possible or a pipe dream?
A: It is possible. Alaska is one example. Another example is Singapore. A full citizen income is more than sufficient to eradicate poverty for everyone.
